Pollution Prevention Internship Program
   
The Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship Program is a partnership between Butler County Recycling & Solid Waste District, Hamilton County Solid Waste District and TechSolve, Inc. The program trains and hosts up to four interns at selected companies in Hamilton and Butler counties using US EPA grant funds. The counties fund 75 percent of the internship and the chosen companies match 25 percent.
Applications will be available in the fall for the 2011 program.
Who is eligible to participate? Companies applying for a summer intern must:
- Be located in Butler County or Hamilton County, Ohio
- Identify projects suitable for an intern and that support long-term environmental goals
- Share project outcomes with the Districts. Confidential information will not be disclosed.
Students applying for the intern position must:
- Be enrolled in a four-year undergraduate or graduate degree program with at least two years completed, or a recent graduate
- Knowledgeable in engineering, environmental studies, or related field
- Commit to working full-time for 12 weeks from May/June until August/September
- Provide his/her own transportation
How do I apply? Why participate? As a direct result of the 2008 and 2009 internships, Smart Papers, Tedia and MillerCoors anticipate a combined annual savings of nearly $900,000 through water, energy and solid waste reductions. For Smart Papers, "these results far exceeded our expectations."
How much does it cost to participate? Participating companies gain an intern at minimal cost. A 25% match of the intern's salary is required (less than $2,000).
What is the timeframe for the program? The intern reports to the participating companies at the end of May or beginning of June, after completing a week of training at TechSolve in Cincinnati. The program ends in August or September.
How does the program work? Every summer, the Butler County and Hamilton County Solid Waste Districts employ college-level interns as temporary contractors in local businesses. Through the Southwest Ohio Pollution Prevention (P2) Internship:
- Companies save money and increase environmental performance
- Students gain hands-on experience in an industrial setting
- Districts obtain data on successful P2 and conservation initiatives
After completing a week of training, interns report to their host company to work full-time for 11 weeks. Interns work directly with company personnel to:
- Develop a working knowledge of plant processes
- Research process variables and economic factors
- Develop hypotheses and rank potential solutions
- Identify, recommend, and as time permits, implement strategies
- Record and present findings in a written report and oral presentation
